Whether or not you realize it, from before you were born, God your Father began caring for you and arranging the details of your life for your best good.

In 2 Kings 6, you’ll find an interesting story that demonstrates how God your Father surrounds you with His care, His provision, and His protection.

In 2 Kings 6:13-14, an angry king sent a huge army against God’s prophet Elisha. Once the king learned that Elisha was in the city of Dothan, the king surrounded Dothan with a huge army.

2 Kings 6:13-14
13 He said, Go and see where he is, that I may send and seize him. And it was told him, He is in Dothan.
14 So [the Syrian king] sent there horses, chariots, and a great army. They came by night and surrounded the city.

Because Elisha’s servant could only see with his physical eyes, he reacted in terror to the awful sight of such a great army.

Because Elisha had a day-to-day relationship with God as his Father, he could “see” with his spiritual eyes. Despite the army which surrounded Elisha and his servant, Elisha remained in great peace.

Elisha prayed that God would open up his servant’s spiritual eyes so that he, too, could see the true situation ― that they were surrounded by God’s protection.

2 Kings 6:15-17
15 When the servant of the man of God rose early and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. Elisha’s servant said to him, Alas, my master! What shall we do?
16 [Elisha] answered, Fear not; for those with us are more than those with them.
17 Then Elisha prayed, Lord, I pray You, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Think about how you’d feel if you could see the supernatural chariots of fire surrounding you to protect you and your loved ones. Wouldn’t you, too, feel more at peace?

It’s only through relationship with God as your Father that your spiritual eyes can be opened.

Because God delights in His Self-appointed role as Father, He demonstrated His Father’s Heart by encircling His children with care and providing for their triumph over their enemies.

God has appointed Himself as your Father. To read many comforting verses about this topic from God’s Word, the Bible, be sure to refer to the sections in this website named He Names Himself Father, His Father’s Heart Expressed, Your Position As Son, and Your Inheritance.

In this next story, and throughout other stories in the Bible, the enemies of God’s people realized that it was God Who worked on behalf of His children.

The Book of Nehemiah describes the work of the people of Jerusalem in rebuilding the city wall that encircled their city and made it more difficult for enemies to harm them.

God had put the desire in Nehemiah’s heart to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the wall. God gave Nehemiah such great favor with his king that the king not only agreed to send Nehemiah to accomplish this task, but the king extended favor, protection, and much provision for the project.

From the beginning of the wall rebuilding, the workers were mocked and taunted by their enemies. Let’s begin reading at Nehemiah 4:

Nehemiah 4:4-23
4 [And Nehemiah prayed] Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn their taunts upon their own heads, and give them for a prey in a land of their captivity.
5 Cover not their iniquity and let not their sin be blotted out before You, for they have vexed [with alarm] the builders and provoked You.
6 So we built the wall, and all [of it] was joined together to half its height, for the people had a heart and mind to work.
7 But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were going up and that the breaches were being closed, they were very angry.
8 And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem, to injure and cause confusion and failure in it.
9 But because of them we made our prayer to our God and set a watch against them day and night.
10 And [the leaders of] Judah said, The strength of the burden bearers is weakening, and there is much rubbish; we are not able to work on the wall.
11 And our enemies said, They will not know or see till we come into their midst and kill them and stop the work.
12 And when the Jews who lived near them came, they said to us ten times, You must return [to guard our little villages]; from all places where they dwell they will be upon us.
13 So I set [armed men] behind the wall in places where it was least protected; I even thus used the people as families with their swords, spears, and bows.
14 I looked [them over] and rose up and said to the nobles and officials and the other people, Do not be afraid of the enemy; [earnestly] remember the Lord and imprint Him [on your minds], great and terrible, and [take from Him courage to] fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.
15 And when our enemies heard that their plot was known to us and that God had frustrated their purpose, we all returned to the wall, everyone to his work.
16 And from that time forth, half of my servants worked at the task, and the other half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail; and the leaders stood behind all the house of Judah.
17 Those who built the wall and those who bore burdens loaded themselves so that everyone worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other hand,
18 And every builder had his sword girded by his side, and so worked. And he who sounded the trumpet was at my side.
19 And I said to the nobles and officials and the rest of the people, The work is great and scattered, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.
20 In whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.
21 So we labored at the work while half of them held the spears from dawn until the stars came out.
22 At that time also I said to the people, Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that at night they may be a guard to us and a laborer during the day.
23 So none of us—I, my kinsmen, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me—took off our clothes; each kept his weapon [in his hand for days].

Soon after, Nehemiah was able to write:

Nehemiah 6:15-16
15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.
16 When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations around us feared and fell far in their own esteem, for they saw that this work was done by our God.

Think about the many types of care that God offered these people as they were rebuilding the wall around their city.

God granted Nehemiah the desire of his heart, to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the wall around the city.

God gave Nehemiah such favor with his king that the king extended favor, protection, and provision. God also gave favor with the workers so that they would agree to build the wall.

God arranged for enough workers to gather and work together to build the wall.

God kept Nehemiah and the people safe from harm.

God provided the materials for building the wall.

God gave the leaders wisdom in all aspects of building and management. God gave the leaders desire and determination.

God gave the workers resolve, unity, and perseverance.

God infused all the people with His strength to work.

God caused their enemies to be so sure of God’s involvement in the rebuilding of the wall that they were not willing to attack Jerusalem.

God enabled them to triumph.

What does God’s Word tell us about God’s ability to surround you with His protection, provision, and care? These six verses offer some insights into His abilities:

1 Corinthians 8:6
6 Yet for us there is [only] one God, the Father, Who is the Source of all things and for Whom we [have life], and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through and by Whom are all things and through and by Whom we [ourselves exist].

Revelation 4:11
11 Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive the glory and the honor and dominion, for You created all things; by Your will they were [brought into being] and were created.

Colossians 1:16-17
16 For it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [by His service, intervention] and in and for Him.
17 And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).

John 1:3
3 All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being.

Romans 11:36
36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. [For all things originate with Him and come from Him; all things live through Him, and all things center in and tend to consummate and to end in Him.] To Him be glory forever! Amen (so be it).

Now that we agree God is able, let’s investigate whether He is willing to care for you.

Perhaps you wonder if He is angry at you for poor choices you’ve made in your life.

Perhaps you’ve always thought of Him as a mean Judge in the sky Who waits for you to make mistakes so that He can punish you.

Worse, perhaps you worry that not only will He punish you, but He will take great pleasure in punishing you.

People all over the world have this very wrong idea of what God is like.

What does God's Word tell us about your Father God’s willingness to encircle you and your loved ones with His protection, provision, and Fatherly care? Peter counsels:

1 Peter 5:7
7Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.

The psalmist offers similar counsel:

Psalm 37:3-11
3Trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) in the Lord and do good; so shall you dwell in the land and feed surely on His faithfulness, and truly you shall be fed.
4Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
5Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass.
6And He will make your uprightness and right standing with God go forth as the light, and your justice and right as [the shining sun of] the noonday.
7Be still and rest in the Lord; wait for Him and patiently lean yourself upon Him; fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass.
8Cease from anger and forsake wrath; fret not yourself--it tends only to evildoing.
9For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait and hope and look for the Lord [in the end] shall inherit the earth.
10For yet a little while, and the evildoers will be no more; though you look with care where they used to be, they will not be found.
11But the meek [in the end] shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Before we investigate the care that we can expect Him to extend toward us, let’s see what He tells us about Himself in these similarly-worded verses.

Exodus 34:6
6And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord! the Lord! a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness and truth,

Psalm 86:5
5For You, O Lord, are good, and ready to forgive [our trespasses, sending them away, letting them go completely and forever]; and You are abundant in mercy and loving-kindness to all those who call upon You.

Psalm 86:15
15But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and loving-kindness and truth.

Psalm 103:8
8The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and plenteous in mercy and loving-kindness.

Psalm 145:8-9
8The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and loving-kindness.
9The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works [the entirety of all things created].

Knowing these things, what comes to your mind when you read the verb “endured” in the next verse?

Acts 13:18
18And for about forty years like a fatherly nurse [foster father] He [God] cared for them in the wilderness and endured their behavior.

You can agree that the term “steadfast love” is certainly proof of His Fatherly care:

Exodus 20:6
6But showing mercy and steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Deuteronomy 5:10
10And showing mercy and steadfast love to thousands and to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Deuteronomy 7:9
9Know, recognize, and understand therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, Who keeps covenant and steadfast love and mercy with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations.

Psalm 105:8
8He is [earnestly] mindful of His covenant and forever it is imprinted on His heart, the word which He commanded and established to a thousand generations,

5And your threshing [time] shall reach to the vintage and the vintage [time] shall reach to the sowing time, and you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely.
6I will give peace in the land; you shall lie down and none shall fill you with dread or make you afraid; and I will clear ferocious (wild) beasts out of the land, and no sword shall go through your land.
7And you shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.
8Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

Leviticus 26:9
9For I will be leaning toward you with favor and regard for you, rendering you fruitful, multiplying you, and establishing and ratifying My covenant with you.
