There are two types of compassion. Human compassion sees a need and tries to meet it ― with human resources, limited human abilities, and limited human resources. Dictionaries point out the frailty of human resources and describe them as needing justification: “He was only human.”

In absolute, thunderous contrast, God the I AM, has all resources, all power, all ability, and all wisdom. Because He is the Father from whom every human father is named, compassion has existed as part of His being throughout eternity. Father God’s compassion is completely undergirded by His wisdom.

Compassion wasn’t created by God. Compassion is an integral part of His nature. One of His Names is I AM Compassion. Better, another of His Names is I AM Compassionate Toward You.

In addition to this section, His compassion is further proved in these sections: He Sees, He Hears, and He Responds.

An excellent example of Father God’s compassion directed to one needy person is found in Ezekiel. This baby girl had been abandoned immediately after her birth by her parents, left in a field to die:

Ezekiel 16:4-6
4And as for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt or swaddled with bands at all.
5No eye pitied you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were cast out in the open field, for your person was abhorrent and loathsome on the day that you were born.
6And when I passed by you and saw you rolling about in your blood, I said to you in your blood, Live! Yes, I said to you still in your natal blood, Live!

God compassionately continues:

Ezekiel 16:9-14
9Then I washed you with water; yes, I thoroughly washed away your [clinging] blood from you and I anointed you with oil.
10I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with [fine seal] leather; and I girded you about with fine linen and covered you with silk.
11I decked you also with ornaments and I put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck.
12And I put a ring on your nostril and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown upon your head!
13Thus you were decked with gold and silver, and your raiment was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth; you ate fine flour and honey and oil. And you were exceedingly beautiful and you prospered into royal estate.
14And your renown went forth among the nations for your beauty, for it was perfect through My majesty and splendor which I had put upon you, says the Lord God.

Although these Old Testament writers wrote down what Father God told them to write between the years 1400 B.C. and 430 B.C., yet God is consistent in what can be termed His “Self description.”

Exodus 34:6
6And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord! the Lord! a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness and truth,

Psalm 86:5
5For You, O Lord, are good, and ready to forgive [our trespasses, sending them away, letting them go completely and forever]; and You are abundant in mercy and loving-kindness to all those who call upon You.

Psalm 86:15
15But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and loving-kindness and truth.

Psalm 103:8
8The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and plenteous in mercy and loving-kindness.

Psalm 145:8-9
8The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and loving-kindness.
9The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works [the entirety of all things created].

Jesus perfectly represented the compassionate, Fatherly Heart of God.

Colossians 1:15
15[Now] He [Jesus] is the exact likeness of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible]; He is the Firstborn of all creation.

Isaiah speaks of Jesus’ compassion:

Isaiah 11:2-5
2And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him--the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the reverential and obedient fear of the Lord--
    3And shall make Him of quick understanding, and His delight shall be in the reverential and obedient fear of the Lord. And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, neither decide by the hearing of His ears;
4But with righteousness and justice shall He judge the poor and decide with fairness for the meek, the poor, and the downtrodden of the earth; and He shall smite (destroy) the earth and the oppressor with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
5And righteousness shall be the girdle of His waist and faithfulness the girdle of His loins.

When Jesus became a Man, He took on all aspects of humanity so that He could identify with us, so He could empathize with us. The Bible calls Him our High Priest:

Hebrews 4:15-16
15For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but One Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning.
16Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God's unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].

In addition to receiving His grace and mercy, as His beloved, you have access to all His compassion.

As you read the passages which follow, remember that your Father God’s compassion is completely undergirded by His wisdom. Whether or not you understand your present circumstances, He is working them out for your best good.

Romans 8:28-30
28We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose.
29For those whom He foreknew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand], He also destined from the beginning [foreordaining them] to be molded into the image of His Son [and share inwardly His likeness], that He might become the firstborn among many brethren.
30And those whom He thus foreordained, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified (acquitted, made righteous, putting them into right standing with Himself). And those whom He justified, He also glorified [raising them to a heavenly dignity and condition or state of being].

In these following verses, “showing steadfast love” can be rephrased “pouring out compassion which is undergirded with Fatherly love and wisdom.”

7The works of His hands are [absolute] truth and justice [faithful and right]; and all His decrees and precepts are sure (fixed, established, and trustworthy).

Not only is His covenant forever imprinted on His heart. You are forever imprinted on His heart. Read this:

Isaiah 30:18
18And therefore the Lord [earnestly] waits [expecting, looking, and longing] to be gracious to you; and therefore He lifts Himself up, that He may have mercy on you and show loving-kindness to you. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) are all those who [earnestly] wait for Him, who expect and look and long for Him [for His victory, His favor, His love, His peace, His joy, and His matchless, unbroken companionship]!

Isaiah 49:15-16
15[And the Lord answered] Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, they may forget, yet I will not forget you.
16Behold, I have indelibly imprinted (tattooed a picture of) you on the palm of each of My hands; your walls are continually before Me.

Because God reveals His loving heart rather clearly through the prophet Isaiah, we will look at verses from that Old Testament Book of the Bible first:

Isaiah 14:24
24The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying, Surely, as I have thought and planned, so shall it come to pass, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand—

Isaiah 27:2-3
2In that day, A vineyard beloved and lovely; sing a responsive song to it and about it!
3I, the Lord, am its Keeper; I water it every moment; lest anyone harm it, I guard and keep it night and day.

Isaiah 30:21
21And your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it, when you turn to the right hand and when you turn to the left.

Isaiah 32:15-17
15Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is valued as a forest.
16Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness (moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation) will abide in the fruitful field.
17And the effect of righteousness will be peace [internal and external], and the result of righteousness will be quietness and confident trust forever.

Isaiah 32:18
18My people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting-places.

Isaiah 34:1
1Come near, you nations, to hear; and hearken, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it; the world, and all things that come forth from it.

Isaiah 37:30
30And [this shall be the sign to you: you shall eat this year what grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from the same. And in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.

Isaiah 40:1
1Comfort, comfort My people, says your God.

Isaiah 40:12-14
12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, marked off the heavens with a [nine-inch] span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?
13Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, or as His counselor has taught Him?
14With whom did He take counsel, that instruction might be given Him? Who taught Him the path of justice and taught Him knowledge and showed Him the way of understanding?

Isaiah 40:18
18To whom then will you liken God? Or with what likeness will you compare Him?

Isaiah 40:21-26
21[You worshipers of idols, you are without excuse.] Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? [These things ought to convince you of God's omnipotence and of the folly of bowing to idols.] Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22It is God Who sits above the circle (the horizon) of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; it is He Who stretches out the heavens like [gauze] curtains and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in,
23Who brings dignitaries to nothing, Who makes the judges and rulers of the earth as chaos (emptiness, falsity, and futility).
24Yes, these men are scarcely planted, scarcely are they sown, scarcely does their stock take root in the earth, when [the Lord] blows upon them and they wither, and the whirlwind or tempest takes them away like stubble.
25To whom then will you liken Me, that I should be equal to him? says the Holy One.
26Lift up your eyes on high and see! Who has created these [stars]? He Who brings out their host by number and calls them all by name; through the greatness of His might and because He is strong in power, not one is missing or lacks anything.

Isaiah 40:28-31
28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding.
29He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound].
    30Even youths shall faint and be weary, and [selected] young men shall feebly stumble and fall exhausted;
31But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired.

Isaiah 41:4
4Who has prepared and done this, calling forth and guiding the destinies of the generations [of the nations] from the beginning? I, the Lord--the first [existing before history began] and with the last [an ever-present, unchanging God]--I AM He.

Isaiah 41:10
10Fear not [there is nothing to fear], for I AM with you; do not look around you in terror and be dismayed, for I AM your God. I will strengthen and harden you to difficulties, yes, I will help you; yes, I will hold you up and retain you with My [victorious] right hand of rightness and justice.

Isaiah 41:13
13For I the Lord your God hold your right hand; I AM the Lord, Who says to you, Fear not; I will help you!

Isaiah 41:25
25I have raised up and impelled to action one from the north, and he comes; from the rising of the sun he calls upon My Name [recognizing that his victories have been granted to him by Me]. And he shall tread upon rulers and deputies as upon mortar and as the potter treads clay. [He comes with the suddenness of a comet, but none of the idol oracles of the nations has anticipated or predicted it.]

Isaiah 42:1-9
1Behold, My Servant, Whom I uphold, My elect in Whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice and right and reveal truth to the nations.
2He will not cry or shout aloud or cause His voice to be heard in the street.
3A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not quench; He will bring forth justice in truth.
4He will not fail or become weak or be crushed and discouraged till He has established justice in the earth; and the islands and coastal regions shall wait hopefully for Him and expect His direction and law.
5Thus says God the Lord--He Who created the heavens and stretched them forth, He Who spread abroad the earth and that which comes out of it, He Who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it:
6I the Lord have called You [the Messiah] for a righteous purpose and in righteousness; I will take You by the hand and will keep You; I will give You for a covenant to the people for a light to the nations,
7To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness from the prison.
8 I AM the Lord; that is My name! And My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to graven images.
9Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.

Compare Isaiah 42:1 [which was written down around 700 years befoe Jesus was born] just above with Matthew 12:18, which, of course, speaks of Jesus:

Matthew 12:18
18Behold, My Servant Whom I have chosen, My Beloved in and with Whom My soul is well pleased and has found its delight. I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall proclaim and show forth justice to the nations.

Isaiah 42:16
16And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known. I will make darkness into light before them and make uneven places into a plain. These things I have determined to do [for them]; and I will not leave them forsaken.

Isaiah 43:2
2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned or scorched, nor will the flame kindle upon you.

Isaiah 43:4-7
4Because you are precious in My sight and honored, and because I love you, I will give men in return for you and peoples in exchange for your life.
5Fear not, for I AM with you; I will bring your offspring from the east and gather you from the west.
6I will say to the north, Give up! and to the south, Keep not back. Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the ends of the earth--
7Even everyone who is called by My name, whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, whom I have made.

Isaiah 43:10-13
10You are My witnesses, says the Lord, and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know Me, believe Me and remain steadfast to Me, and understand that I AM He. Before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me.
11 I, even I, AM the Lord, and besides Me there is no Savior.
12 I have declared [the future] and have saved [the nation in times of danger], and I have shown [that I AM God]--when there was no strange and alien god among you; therefore you are My witnesses, says the Lord, that I AM God.
13Yes, from the time of the first existence of day and from this day forth I AM He; and there is no one who can deliver out of My hand. I will work, and who can hinder or reverse it?

Isaiah 43:16
16Thus says the Lord, Who makes a way through the sea and a path through the mighty waters

Isaiah 43:18-21
18Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old.
19Behold, I AM doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
20The beasts of the field honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen,
21The people I formed for Myself, that they may set forth My praise [and they shall do it].

Isaiah 43:25
25 I, even I, AM He Who blots out and cancels your transgressions, for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins.

Isaiah 44:3-4
3For I will pour [My] water upon him who is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit upon your offspring, and My blessing upon your descendants.
4And they shall spring up among the grass like willows or poplars by the watercourses.

Isaiah 44:7-8
7Who is like Me? Let him [stand and] proclaim it, declare it, and set [his proofs] in order before Me, since I made and established the people of antiquity. [Who has announced from of old] the things that are coming? Then let them declare yet future things.
8Fear not, nor be afraid [in the coming violent upheavals]; have I not told it to you from of old and declared it? And you are My witnesses! Is there a God besides Me? There is no [other] Rock; I know not any.

Isaiah 44:9-20
9All who make graven idols are confusion, chaos, and worthlessness. Their objects (idols) in which they delight do not profit them, and their own witnesses (worshipers) do not see or know, so that they are put to shame.
10Who is [such a fool as] to fashion a god or cast a graven [handmade] image that is profitable for nothing?
11Behold, all his fellows shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen, [how can they make a god?] they are but men. Let them all be gathered together, let them stand forth; they shall be terrified, they shall be put to shame together.
12The ironsmith sharpens and uses a chisel and works it over the coals; he shapes [the core of the idol] with hammers and forges it with his strong arm. He becomes hungry and his strength fails; he drinks no water and is faint.
13The carpenter stretches out a line, he marks it out with a pencil or red ocher; he fashions [an idol] with planes and marks it out with the compasses; and he shapes it to have the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, that it may dwell in a house.
14He hews for himself cedars, and takes the holm tree and the oak and lets them grow strong for himself among the trees of the forest; he plants a fir tree or an ash, and the rain nourishes it.
15Then it becomes fuel for a man to burn; a part of it he takes and warms himself, yes, he kindles a fire and bakes bread. [Then out of the remainder] he also makes a god and worships it! He [with his own hands] makes it into a graven image and falls down and worships it!
16He burns part of the wood in the fire; with part of it he [cooks and] eats flesh, he roasts meat and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire!
17And from what is left [of the log] he makes a god, his graven idol. He falls down to it, he worships it and prays to it and says, Deliver me, for you are my god!
18They do not know or understand, for their eyes God has let become besmeared so that they cannot see, and their minds as well so that they cannot understand.
19And no one considers in his mind, nor has he knowledge and understanding [enough] to say [to himself], I have burned part of this log in the fire, and also I have baked bread on its coals and have roasted meat and eaten it. And shall I make the remainder of it into an abomination [the very essence of what is disgusting, detestable, and shamefully vile in the eyes of a jealous God]? Shall I fall down and worship the stock of a tree [a block of wood without consciousness or life]?
20That kind of man feeds on ashes [and finds his satisfaction in ashes]! A deluded mind has led him astray, so that he cannot release and save himself, or ask, Is not [this thing I am holding] in my right hand a lie?

Isaiah 44:22
22I have blotted out like a thick cloud your transgressions, and like a cloud your sins. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.

Isaiah 44:24
24Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and He Who formed you from the womb: I AM the Lord, Who made all things, Who alone stretched out the heavens, Who spread out the earth by Myself [who was with Me]?

Isaiah 45:2
2 I will go before you and level the mountains [to make the crooked places straight]; I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut asunder the bars of iron.

Isaiah 45:5-6
5 I AM the Lord, and there is no one else; there is no God besides Me. I will gird and arm you, though you have not known Me,
6That men may know from the east and the rising of the sun and from the west and the setting of the sun that there is no God besides Me. I AM the Lord, and no one else [is He].

Isaiah 45:8
8Let fall in showers, you heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness [the pure, spiritual, heaven-born possibilities that have their foundation in the holy being of God]; let the earth open, and let them [skies and earth] sprout forth salvation, and let righteousness germinate and spring up [as plants do] together; I the Lord have created it.

Isaiah 45:12
12 I made the earth and created man upon it. I, with My hands, stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.

Isaiah 45:18
18For thus says the Lord--Who created the heavens, God Himself, Who formed the earth and made it, Who established it and did not create it to be a worthless waste; He formed it to be inhabited--I AM the Lord, and there is no one else.

Isaiah 45:21-23
21Declare and bring forward your strong arguments [for praying to gods that cannot save]; yes, take counsel together. Who announced this beforehand (long ago)? [What god] declared it of old? Was it not I, the Lord? And there is no other God besides Me, a rigidly and uncompromisingly just and righteous God and Savior; there is none besides Me.
22Look to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I AM God, and there is no other.
23I have sworn by Myself, the word is gone out of My mouth in righteousness and shall not return, that unto Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear [allegiance].

4Even to your old age I AM He, and even to hair white with age will I carry you. I have made, and I will bear; yes, I will carry and will save you.

Isaiah 46:9-10
9[Earnestly] remember the former things, [which I did] of old; for I AM God, and there is no one else; I AM God, and there is none like Me,
10Declaring the end and the result from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure and purpose,

Isaiah 48:3
3I have declared from the beginning the former things; they went forth from My mouth and I made them known; then suddenly I did them, and they came to pass [says the Lord].

Isaiah 48:6
6You have heard [these things foretold], now you see this fulfillment. And will you not bear witness to it? I show you specified new things from this time forth, even hidden things [kept in reserve] which you have not known.

Isaiah 48:11
11For My own sake, for My own sake, I do it [I refrain and do not utterly destroy My people]; for why should I permit My Name to be polluted and profaned [which it would be if the Lord completely destroyed His chosen people]? And I will not give My glory to another [by permitting the worshipers of idols to triumph over you].

Isaiah 48:13
13Yes, My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand forth together [to execute My decrees].

Isaiah 48:15
15 I, even I, have foretold it; yes, I have called him; I have brought him, and [the Lord] shall make his way prosperous.

Isaiah 48:18-19
18Oh, that you had hearkened to My commandments! Then your peace and prosperity would have been like a flowing river, and your righteousness [the holiness and purity of the nation] like the [abundant] waves of the sea.
19Your offspring would have been like the sand, and your descendants like the offspring of the sea; their name would not be cut off or destroyed from before Me.

Isaiah 48:22
22There is no peace, says the Lord, for the wicked.

Isaiah 49:18
18Lift up your eyes round about and see [the returning ones, eager to build up]; all these gather together and come to you. As I live, says the Lord, you shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament and bind them on you as a bride does.

Isaiah 49:24-25
24Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives of the just be delivered?
25For thus says the Lord: Even the captives of the mighty will be taken away, and the prey of the terrible will be delivered; for I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will give safety to your children and ease them.

Isaiah 51:5
5My rightness and justice are near, My salvation is going forth, and My arms shall rule the peoples; the islands shall wait for and expect Me, and on My arm shall they trust and wait with hope.

Isaiah 51:6
6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall be dissolved and vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner. But My salvation shall be forever, and My rightness and justice [and faithfully fulfilled promises] shall not be abolished.
